About the Artist
Tamara creates distinctive and unique woven fiber wall sculptures.
Her journey of a thousand stitches began with a passion for working with fabric, fiber and a continuing desire to explore the possibilities. Tamara is fascinated by texture and how layers of materials create a depth of interest. Much of her work is inspired by the flora and fauna of the Sonoran desert. In recent years utilizing found and repurposed materials have found there way into her more socially conscious themes.
About the Process
Over the past 40 years, Tamara has explored almost every fiber technique there is. She developed her sculptural weavings when she found a piece of hardware cloth that was bent and warped into an interesting shape. She began using this building material as a structure to weave fiber materials to create malleable tapestries that hold 3-dimensional shapes. Tamara describes her basic process,” I shape and paint the grid, giving the first layer of color and detail, continuing to build on the form, adding texture by embellishing with layers of ribbons, thread and beads. Using fabrics as under painting and each stitch or bead as a brush stroke, the sculptures are impressionistic in feel. My individual and original technique moves the fiber beyond craft into sculptural art.”
Tamara invites you to view her work up close and personal by zooming in on photos to appreciate all the details of materials and embellishments.
