Melissa Leuschel (32), originally from Florida, has been drawn to expressing herself through art since childhood. While studying education at the University of Central Florida, she was mesmerized by a giant stained glass installation in the University library. This sparked a fascination and appreciation of art glass, and she started studying stained glass after she completed obtaining her degrees in English and Education. After spending years in the Middle East and China as an educational consultant, she now uses inspiration from her time abroad and the world around her to create her own unique modern stained glass art pieces in her studio in Tucson, AZ. While she is still developing her style, her use of traditional arches as a frame for many of her works nods to a respect of the origins of the craft. A big motivation for Melissa in her art is her dedication to social justice/ activism and she has also partnered with multiple artists to create collaborative pieces to challenge herself as an artist and explore multiple techniques through expression in stained glass.

About the Process
This is the area in my studio where I start the process of creating a glass piece. I work with a client to create a design that they love and then select glass that would fit with their vision. I show the client how the glass will look in the design with different lights (lightbox is featured on the far left), then cut the glass on the table.

This is the area in my studio where I start the process of creating a glass piece. I work with a client to create a design that they love and then select glass that would fit with their vision. I show the client how the glass will look in the design with different lights (lightbox is featured on the far left), then cut the glass on the table.
The next step in the process is to grind the edges of the glass down so it is smoother and so it fits perfectly into the design. Pictured here are two grinders, one ring saw (for cutting difficult glass cuts), and a small oven (for curing glass paint).
The last step of finishing a glass piece is shown here. This is my area where I solder (attach the glass pieces with melted lead) the pieces to create strong art pieces that last the test of time! I then finish each piece with framing (either in lead, zinc or copper) for extra strength and durability.
