About the Artist
Katie Cooper uses room installations and works on canvas, paper, and wood to explore both formal composition and the interweaving of physical and nonphysical realities.
A working artist for most of her life, Cooper earned her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York before moving to Tucson in 1990. She has shown nationwide and done residencies and community projects in Southern Arizona. In 2020, she was awarded grants by the Arizona Commission on the Arts and the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona for the Art Wagon Return project, bringing art workshops to rural communities while researching the connection between land and perception. She is also a 2020-21 featured artist on the CAFÉ callforentry.org website.

About the Process
Finished paper. I turn junk mail, torn paper bags and other trash into pulp using a kitchen blender. I sort the pulp by color and mix it to get different shades. Larger 9x9 sheets become the “heart” of wall installations or are torn into smaller parts. I usually gesso (prime) the paper I will paint on later.
Work in progress, one of the Road series. This series references shifts in perception. I’m using up the last of my acrylics and alkyds on canvas paintings, as I move into more eco-friendly mediums.
Virtual Studio Tour
Transition studio in rented garage showing current installation work-in-progress. I will have Traces, Talismans, and works on canvas here also, for the duration of the Open Studio tour.
Home workspace. I use watercolor, ink and found pigments for the small works on paper. These pieces are both self-contained artworks, and movable elements of large wall installations.
I like to look at previous work while starting new work, for example this “wall of Little Jewels.” I spend most non-studio time outdoors working, walking and riding my mule; this lifestyle continues to inspire the overview-like “energy maps” with references to migration, space and time.

In person by cash, check or credit card. I'll have the studio through December and welcome visitors! Please call or text to let me know when you'll be coming by. (An online store will be added to kcooperstudio.com soon.) The small watercolors that are elements of an installation can be purchased right off the wall, and will be immediately replaced by new ones. The installations are meant to be constantly changing and you’ll be part of that process in action.
