About the Artist
Born in Budapest, Hungary, Kathy Keler has lived most of her life in the United States. She received a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College, and lived in Washington DC for three decades, where she organized and participated in numerous exhibitions and art exchange programs. These included residency/exhibit projects in Budapest, Hungary; Lyon, France; and Calcutta, India.
Since moving to Tucson, Arizona in 2009 she has had a solo exhibit at the Artfare 45 Walls Gallery, has been a member of the Tucson Women's Art Collective, and has presented work at opening of the Catalyst art space in the Tucson Mall (sponsored by SAACA) She has also been active in performance art–producing, performing in, and creating videos and set and costume design for community theater events since 2012; she received a grant from the Arts Foundation for Tucson and Southern Arizona in 2021.
About the Process
My goal for the last few years has been to bring together painting, performance and video into a new art form that can communicate to viewers on many levels. The performance events I have been presenting for the last 8 years (described as “metaphysical vaudeville”) have the same goal as what I always had for my painting: to create an imaginative space where the viewer is enabled to experience thoughts and feelings which are not usually accessible in ordinary experience; with beauty, a poetic/magical atmosphere, and humor helping to give the viewer “permission” to experience a larger reality, perhaps a transcendent reality.
