Kathryn Gastelum, a Tucson native, received a BFA in Graphic Design from the University of Arizona in ’87 while studying in Paris, France for art and art history. Thereafter, Interior Design became her exciting work as an Allied Member of A.SI.D. until it was imperative to paint exclusively. Inspired by jazz music, Southwest sunsets and travel, Kathryn’s paintings are an improvisation in color, or her “visual jazz.” Color is intense and moves the soul, like music. Presently, she is working towards a Museum Studies Certificate at the U of A Fine Art Graduate College, while painting and exhibiting as a member artist at Untitled Gallery, near the Steinfeld Warehouse.
Description of Medium
Kathryn is an abstract painter and colorist, working in mediums of oil, cold wax and acrylic on large canvases. When painting in realism, subjects range from the Sahara sand dunes, bedouins to anything French or inspiring from travels. Another art form, she designs vibrant, hand painted, one-of-a-kind silk scarves in beautiful abstract designs using professional french dyes.
