About the Artist
An improvisation in paint, Kathryn Gastelum’s abstract paintings evolve into her own “visual jazz” since jazz music is a great inspiration. It is thought provoking, abstract, progressive and sophisticated, meanwhile the stunning beauty of our Southwest sunsets -nature’s very best abstraction- truly inspires too. Therefore, each canvas becomes the background for rhythmic shapes and tones of color with oil and cold wax. The abstract expression of each painting is a meditation of moving color waiting to be discovered and interpreted by each viewer.
About the Process
When painting, I create my abstract paintings with oil and cold wax medium and alot of mark making on mostly large scale canvases or cradled birch panels.
For my hand painted silk scarves and wraps, I use professional Jacquard dyes on stone washed silk or crepe de chine panels.
Each design is one-of-a-kind and designed spontaneously and then it is steam set, ironed and ready for wear!
