Jimmy Descant, Severe ReConstructivist
Mixed Media 2D & 3DPerforming ArtsSculpture
About the Artist
As a Severe ReConstructivist, I started creating assemblage art in 1996 in New Orleans after a 15 year career as a roadie, pinball machine refurbisher, mechanic, salesman… Then I saw in the parts found at thrift stores and flea markets my own vision of what craftsmen put into their anonymous vision and expression of their part in creating the Golden Age of American manufacturing. Being completely self taught, I have compounded the ideas and process of found object assemblage, and inspired in my transformative moves, created my version of the West in environmental, socio-political current events, and First Peoples imagery. There is no welding in my work, it’s all cold connections. I find parts that have never seen each other that mesh naturally and form my style in a clean professional fit. Recycling is a major key, and the finding of the raw materials is the hunt and instinct, of which I am a professional in acquiring the vintage and beautiful in out of the way places. My style developed into what I call “Western Futurism” and developed live assemblage art performances in response to economic meltdown, politics, and social conscience.

About the Process
As a Severe ReConstructivist, I see in the parts found at thrift stores and flea markets my own vision of what craftsmen put into their anonymous vision and expression of their part in creating the Golden Age of American manufacturing. Completely self taught, I have compounded the ideas and process of found object assemblage, which inspired my transformative moves, and created my version of the West in environmental, socio-political current events, and First Peoples imagery; calling my style “Western Futurism”. I find parts that have never seen each other that mesh naturally and form my style in a clean professional fit. I see in my found parts, the faces and trials of the Native as well as the newcomer Cowboy’s affect, and have been working my talents and art into visions of the mountains, deserts, their people, and current events in socio/political commentary, merging the past and future into something astounding to the viewer, and to the Universe. In 2010, I started doing live assemblage art performances of in the moment American greatness and failures. A contemporary commentary using parts of the past to send message about the present, and future.
